Ragdolls are big muscular cats with silky soft skin, mesmerizing blue eyes, and pointed coloration. They have a calm and gentle aura. Having originated in 1960 in California by Ann Baker, they are the product of selective breeding over many generations from litters of kittens borne by a white domestic cat named Josephine.
These cats derive their name from their tendency to droop when picked up. Their breed is loved for its docile and gentle personality.
Today, famous with the name of “Persian Longhair,” Persian cats have an obscured origin, and their existence dates back to 1620, and they were imported from Persia to Italy. Phylogenetic studies, however, show that Persian cats of the modern era have lost their phytogeographic signature. They are a longhaired cat with a cute circular face, complemented with a sweet and relaxed nature unless disturbed by high-intensity noise.
Appearance
Ragdoll cats are among the most beautiful and intelligent breeds to exist. This breed is of medium size with semi-long hair, which gives them a plushy soft texture. They are low shedding most of the year, except spring when they start to molt.
They have blue-colored eyes and pointed coloration over the body. Their coat pattern can be classified into five groups: colorpoint, mitted, bicolor, torte point, and lynx point. Their coloring ranges from white, lilac, cream, chocolate, and blue.
The fourth most popular cat breed, Persian cats, usually have a short round face with chunky bodies and thick fur coats. They have a green or blue look, and artificial selection has flattened their face structure. They are 7-20 pounds in weight. They have different colors, such as orange, cream, or grey.

Maintenance – Ragdoll vs. Persian
Ragdoll cats have silky soft fur without an underlying coat. They are considered low-shedding cats if you maintain a regular maintenance schedule. Ideally, ensure you groom them every 2-3 weeks with a soft brush. However, during the spring, their shedding increases.
A bath every three months would be sufficient. Ensure their nails are trimmed regularly.
Persian cats have a thick furry coats with strict maintenance timetables. This is because there is an increased chance of tangling. It is recommended to use a wide-toothed metal comb to aid grooming.
These cats also tend to accumulate dirt and grease on their fur and may require more frequent bathing. However, it is important not to over-bath Persian cats to prevent their skin from drying out the skin.
Persian cats also require cleaning of the nose and eyes regularly. This is because they have narrow air passages due to having a flat face. Therefore any dirt must be removed to avoid any breathing difficulties.
Persian cats may develop genetic Polycystic kidneys; thus, a regular medical checkup may avoid disease progression and initiation.
Temperament
Ragdolls are sociable and company lovers. They are highly affectionate and are desirous of human attention.
They have passive and calm nature and are very easy to handle. They tend to follow their owners within the house and run to doors to welcome them, earning them the title of “dog-like.” They are often described as being intelligent, humble, and gentle creatures.
They are labeled as floor cats who do not like to jump up to higher points, but they don’t mind jumping to their owners in bed or on sofas in the lounge. They can be a little demanding and attention-seeking at times.
Persian cats are independent in nature. They are also very friendly. They are good to go with unfamiliar faces as well.
However, they love to relax and can be a little inactive, and avoid playful behavior compared to other breeds. They are less demanding than ragdolls, but their intelligence level is a little lower than average, and they can’t take as good care of themselves and learn things a bit slower. They need encouragement and stimulation to get them to play a game.
However, their activity level can be improved with training and teaching, which will require patience. Unlike Ragdolls, Persians don’t keep roaming around the house; instead, they are often found napping on a cushion.
Suitable for
Persian cats may or may not be suitable for families with children due to the amount of time required for regular maintenance. Persian cats are not a good choice if a family is looking for a playmate for their children.
They can be trained to a particular activity level; however, this requires time. On the other hand, a super active and social Ragdoll may be a good choice if someone prefers these traits along with being friendly and affectionate.
